Sable Island was established in 1998 by Jeremy Duschenes and Peter Milne to
bring high-end design-led solid-wood furniture to a British market, which - if you can
remember that far back - was still dominated by yellowing
pine at one end of the spectrum, and dark stained mahogany at the other.
Our
early designs showed a clear North American / Shaker influence and we started
with North American hardwoods, first cherry, then maple, walnut and eventually
oak. Now nearly a decade later, those timbers along with ash remain our favourites,
and the Shaker influence remains in our work.
We design most of the furniture we produce, and then find craftsmen around the world
to make it for us. Some of those craftsmen are in the UK, and some are abroad. We
don’t really mind where they are as long as they love wood as much as we do, as long
as they are superb at what they do and work in a safe and ethically
operated environment. |
