A key issue is that the furniture we produce should be long
lasting, not disposable. In setting our philosophical compass, we were greatly
influenced by Thomas Moser, the eminent American cabinetmaker who brought the Shaker
style back to prominence in the USA about 40 years ago, when he said, "If you are
going to cut down a tree which has spent 150 years growing, you have a moral obligation
to make something out of it which will last at least as long".
Without wishing to be
morbid, we try to build that idea into every piece of furniture we make, intending
that it will last much longer than the people who buy it.
We also hope that apart
from being useful, our furniture will provide tactile pleasure. Well-finished
wood is almost irresistibly attractive to the touch, whereas when did you last
run your hand lovingly over a melamine work top? |
