Most importantly, the detailed sanding which affects what you feel when you run your hand over a piece of Sable Island furniture is done by hand.

Generally we use traditional construction techniques - mortise and tenon, tongue and groove, dovetails - though if there is a technical advantage to be had from using a more modern method such as biscuit jointing, we will use that too. There is no point in being sentimental about using old technology if modern technology will produce a more robust piece of furniture.

We use several finishes, depending on the timber and the design. From a tactile point of view, the most pleasing is a waxed finish, though it requires more on-going maintenance than a lacquer or polyurethane finish.

In all cases, a good finish will not only protect the wood and feel warm to the touch, but will also bring out the grain.
