Peter Milne’s skill as a furniture designer seems to be one of the best kept secrets in the business. Not surprising perhaps, since most of his best designs are hidden away in the deep recesses of corporate headquarters in London, in the boardrooms of some of the largest and most prestigious banks, law firms and public companies in the country.

Nearly 30 years ago Peter was the founding director of Peter Milne Furniture Makers, a company based in London’s East end which provided custom-made furniture to the pinnacles of the corporate world.

Peter describes it as a tough market - his customers wanted absolute originality, they wanted impeccable quality, they wanted it delivered yesterday, and they bargained hard on price. On the other hand, in some ways it was a designer’s dream world, where every new job started with a blank sheet of paper and no customer wanted anything too derivative.

Peter eventually got tired of British bureaucracy and the British climate and now lives in Barbados where he makes furniture for the rich and famous and sails in his spare time.
