Sourcing raw materials

Furniture making starts in the forest, where trees are harvested and taken to sawmills. As a matter of policy we stay away from tropical timbers, and use fast growing timbers and timbers known to come from sustainable sources.

And, as Thomas Moser, the American cabinet maker credited with bringing the Shaker style back into vogue 40 years ago, once said, "If you are going to cut down a tree which grew for 150 years, you have a responsibility to make something out of it which will last at least as long." To us, this is a guiding principle, an obligation to respect the raw materials we are using, and to use them well.

Kiln Drying

Most of the timber we use has been kiln dried before it arrives at the factory, but it will have continued to absorb moisture during transport.
