Before we start working with the wood we put it in our own kilns
to get the moisture content to just where it needs to be.
Kilning is one
of those things you can’t really rush, because the water content of the
wood needs to be decreased slowly, otherwise the wood becomes
unstable.
Rough Mill
Rough Mill is the stage at which the wood is cut to its general shape.
The main pieces of equipment used are thicknessers which cut the top
and bottom faces of a piece of wood so that they are parallel and flat,
jointers which cut the edges of the boards straight, and spindle moulders
which shape components.
We also use chop saws which cut components to length,
the spider which glues up multiple pieces into wider boards, wide-belt
sanders which refine components coming out of the thicknesser, and
four-siders which can prepare all four long sides of a piece of wood in
one pass.
