Grain matching

Many parts of a chest of drawers are made of several pieces of wood glued together, a process which is called laminating. Plywood is a form of lamination where the pieces of wood are glued together face-on, but equally common is the type where boards are glued together edge on, creating a wider piece of wood. Tops of chests are the most common example.

In this case a lot of responsibility falls on the person doing the grain matching, making sure that boards will look right next to each other, in tone, colour and grain pattern. It sounds easier than it is because at this stage the wood is still pretty rough, and the grain hard to see.

Fine Mill

Fine Mill is the stage at which the components created in Rough Mill are refined.
