He will be applying glue with a little
brush or a spreader, carefully bringing the components together,
clamping them, making sure that everything is square (particularly
important on drawer boxes) and then moving on to the next piece
while the glue on the first piece dries.
Finishing
Finishing is a multi-step process. Initially a base-coat is applied,
usually sprayed on. This seals the wood, but because it is the
first liquid to be applied to the grain, it tends to make the wood
swell very slightly, creating a slight roughness on the surface.
The roughness then needs to be sanded off, a process called
de-nibbing, which is done almost entirely by hand.
Depending
on the finish, additional coats may need to be applied, and
possibly also de-nibbed, and then eventually the top coat is
applied in a sealed
environment. |
